The Difference between Aghori and Naga Sadhu

Read Time:1 Minute, 38 Second

Aghori and Naga Sadhu are two ascetic orders of Hinduism who have a strong presence in India.

Though both sects follow the same religion, their practices differ significantly. This article will explore the key differences between these two groups.

Aghori

Aghoris are believed to be practitioners of Tantric Shaktism, an ancient form of Hinduism that is based on the worship of Shakti (the divine mother). They may be identified by their distinct style of dress which includes bright colors, dreadlocks or shaved heads, long nails and painted faces.

They tend to live in small communities near cremation grounds and practice extreme forms of self-mortification. The Aghoris believe that by engaging in such activities they become closer to Shiva, their deity.

Naga Sadhus

Naga Sadhus are ascetics who follow Hinduism’s Vaishnava tradition. These sadhus can often be seen at religious festivals wearing orange robes with ash smeared across their bodies.

Unlike Aghoris, Naga Sadhus do not engage in extreme forms of self-mortification. Instead, they focus on cultivating mental strength through meditation and prayer. Furthermore, unlike Aghoris who live near cremation grounds, Naga Sadhus prefer to meditate alone in remote locations such as forests or caves.

Distinct Practices

In terms of religious practices there are several distinctions between Aghoris and Naga Sadhus. For example, while both groups perform rituals involving offerings to deities like Shiva or Vishnu; Aghoris also offer sacrifices to powerful demons known as Bhuts or Pishachas. Additionally, while both groups practice yoga postures for spiritual development; Aghoris typically take a more aggressive approach than Naga Sadhus do.

Conclusion

The differences between these two ascetic orders illustrate the diversity within Hinduism. While both share some common beliefs and practices they remain distinct from one another due to the different approaches each group takes towards spiritual growth.

Whether you identify with one sect or another it is important to remember that all paths lead towards God when taken sincerely with faith and dedication.
