Exploring the Ancient Ways of Aghoris in Varanasi
Varanasi, one of the oldest cities in India and an important pilgrimage site for Hindus, is also home to a mysterious cult known as Aghoris. The Aghoris are unique among Hindu sects and their practices are shrouded in mystery and fear. This article will explore the history, beliefs, and practices of this ancient sect.
The origin of the Aghori cult dates back to at least 1000 BC when they were mentioned in Vedic literature as a group that practiced extreme asceticism and worshiped Lord Shiva. In modern times, it is believed that the sect was formed around 17th century AD by a man named Baba Kina Ram who was inspired by Lord Shiva’s teachings. He established several ashrams across India where he taught his disciples about his spiritual views on life. Today, there are several thousand followers scattered across India but most reside in Varanasi near cremation grounds or other places associated with death such as graveyards. They typically dress in saffron robes and carry tridents (trishuls) which symbolize their dedication to Lord Shiva.
The primary goal of an Aghori is to reach enlightenment through extreme asceticism and self-discipline while embracing all aspects of life regardless if they’re considered ‘good’ or ‘bad’. To achieve this state they must break down all boundaries between themselves and the world around them including social conventions such as caste systems or religious taboos like consuming meat or alcohol which goes against traditional Hindu beliefs. Additionally, they believe that death should be embraced rather than feared since it’s part of life’s natural cycle which can lead them towards enlightenment more quickly. The ritualistic practices employed by the Aghoris include smearing ashes from cremated corpses on their bodies along with drinking from human skulls (kapalas), eating meat from dead animals (especially monkeys) as well as begging for food from strangers instead of buying it from markets like normal people do. These rituals may seem strange but they’re done with a sincere devotion towards achieving enlightenment so that one day they’ll reunite with Lord Shiva after death.
The Aghori community has continued its unique spiritual traditions throughout history despite facing much persecution due to their unconventional beliefs and practices. Although some may find these customs strange or even disturbing, we should respect them for what they believe in no matter how different it may be from our own views on life because ultimately everyone is seeking truth within themselves yet going about it differently according to their own path
